April Equipment Sales

The retail sales performance of several equipment categories in April continued to be affected by discounting and soft sales. The woods and footwear categories garnered low single-digit percentage increases in dollar sales compared with the same month in 2002. But data compiled by Kissimmee, Fla.-based Golf Datatech indicated that retailers were getting fewer dollars per sale. Meanwhile, the iron, glove and ball categories experienced declines in both unit and dollar sales compared with last year. The drop in rounds played continued to have an adverse impact on ball sales.
