Sales in several golf product categories increased in January, according to Golf Datatech LLC, a Kissimmee, Fla.-based industry research firm. Woods sales rose 4.6 percent in dollars and 0.5 percent in units compared with January 2003, suggesting an escalation in prices. Similarly, while putter unit sales slipped 1.5 percent, they commanded higher average prices, with dollar sales increasing 4.2 percent. The strongest performance was in the shoe category, where units rose 4.3 percent and dollars increased 4.9 percent. The biggest laggard was golf bags, where sales fell 2.6 percent in units and 5.5 percent in dollars.
