Equipment sales rose across several product categories in August, led again by the irons category, which has registered increases in unit and dollar sales every month of the year, according to Golf Datatech LLC, a Kissimmee, Fla.-based research firm. Irons sales increased 5.7 percent in dollars and 5.2 percent in units compared with August 2003. The category has posted such year-over-year gains since January. Wedges and balls also recorded sales gains in August. Dollar sales of wedges and balls rose 3.4 percent and 1.4 percent, respectively, compared with August 2003, while unit sales increased 4.4 percent and 1.2 percent, respectively. The metalwoods category registered a 6.2 percent increase in unit sales, but dollar sales fell 6 percent, reflecting continued discounting. Putter sales declined for the fourth consecutive month, dropping 5.4 percent in dollars and 1.9 percent in units compared with the same month a year ago.
