1/12/2005

Rounds played at U.S. golf courses fell 6.3 percent in November, according to Golf Datatech’s most recent statistics. That caused the year-to-date figures to edge slightly into negative territory compared with 2003 figures. The decline in rounds was felt across the country, with Florida, which was up .5 percent, the only region to post an increase in rounds. For the first 11 months of 2004, rounds played were running .1 percent behind 2003. Several regions reported double-digit declines, according to Golf Datatech. The West South Central region, which emcompasses Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana, fell 21.6 percent, and Texas dropped 21.5 percent. Elsewhere, rounds played declined 11.7 percent in New England, and 11 percent in both the Middle Atlantic (New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey) and the East South Central (Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama) regions. Golf Datatech also reported that unit sales of balls fell 1.6 percent in November. But wood sales increased 11.8 percent and iron rose 2.7 percent Date Posted: 1/12/2005
